NPR Sunday Puzzle, Sun, Jan 11, 2009

The theme of today's NPR Sunday Puzzle echoed 2d Pee Dee [River with an alphabetical-sounding name] in yesterday's New York Times puzzle.

I only struggled with the on-air challenge examples when they involved food: empty calories (what are they?) and baked ziti (not something in Magdalen's repertoire).

Letter sounds reminded me of two puzzles from my youth, making them at least 10 years old:
ICURAQTINVU
and in a similar vein but with a slight twist:
YYURYYUBICURYY4ME
Today's challenge was:
Take a very common three-letter word. Say the letters phonetically and together they'll sound like a six-letter word meaning knockout. What word is it?
and it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out. As usual, I'll only say what I think the answer is after the deadline.
