NPR Puzzle 8/15/10 - Cornelia, Meet Caroline. Claire, Meet Carlie

Here's this week's puzzle:
Name two girls' names that are anagrams of each other and both start with the letter "C." The answer should be a well-mixed anagram, with more than two letters switched in one name to get the other.
We've found the intended answer and one other.  The intended answer is CORNELIA and CAROLINE, but we also like CLAIRE and CARLIE.  Just because most Americans would think Carly the more proper spelling doesn't mean that Carlie isn't a valid & recognized name outside the US.  I don't entirely agree with the idea -- floated on Blaine's blog, I gather -- that if the initial C and the ultimate letter are the same in both names, that's not enough of an anagram.  Still, I agree that Carol and Coral seem insufficiently mixed.  Oh, well, I suspect Will will only list Cornelia/Caroline as the official answer.

I promised I would provide attributions and commentary on Thursday, and I lied!  Sorry.  We had Ross's brother & his family staying with us for a few days, and it got busy.  You understand.

Still, better late than never, right?

This is Caroline Lizius (1825 - 1904?), in a portrait completed in 1843.  This is not what we would expect an 18-year-old woman to look like these days.

This is Cornelia Vetterlein (25 December, 1812 - 5 March, 1862); the artist (Joseph Stieler) is the same as above, and here the portrait is of a 16-year-old.  I love the rather costume-y outfit, reminiscent of a Medieval lady.

Now for some more modern women:  Here's Claire, photographed in Barcelona:

And that means this is Carlie:
