NPR Puzzle - Yonkers Unyokes Donkeys; Koreans' Monkeys Snorkel

Here's this week's puzzle:
Name a city in the United States that ends in the letter S. The city is one of the largest cities in its state. Change the S to a different letter and rearrange the result to get the state the city is in. What are the city and state?
Don't ask me why (after Des Moines) the first city I thought was Yonkers, New York, because I have no idea.  My subconscious may be a better puzzle solver than I am when I'm deliberately thinking about it.  Anyway, that's the answer.

Yonkers is north of Manhattan, so I figure Will Shortz drives through it, or his train goes there, or something.  Being the kind of guy whose entire brain all the time works the way my subconscious does for 30 seconds twice a week, Will must have seen the name Yonkers and figured out its connection to New York.  I dunno -- I'm starting to think Will was the kind of guy in school that the rest of us loved to hate...

Here are my photos of Yonkers.  Click on any of them to see what the subject is:

After getting Yonkers, New York (the 4th largest city in the state), I decided to do more research. There are only 8 city/state combinations of the same letter length where the city ends with “s”:
• Los Angeles, California
• Ames, Iowa
• St. Peter’s, Missouri
• Hastings, Nebraska
• Columbus, Nebraska
• Sparks, Nevada
• Las Cruces, New Mexico
• Yonkers, New York

I assumed a limit of the top 10 cities in population by state (but, apparently, there are only 8 cities in Rhode Island) using 2005 population as reported on www.infoplease.com/states.html. Of the 498 cities, 49 end with “s”. There are 29 states with at least one of the 49 cities, including Iowa with 5 (Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, West Des Moines, Ames). If we only allowed the top five cities by population in each state, there would be only 29 eligible cities spread over 21 states, without Ames, St. Peters, Hastings and Columbus making the above list.

The smallest largest city is Burlington, Vermont (pop. 38,531). The smallest 10th largest city is also in Vermont, Northfield (pop. 3,157). The largest 10th largest city is Anaheim, California (pop. 331,804), which is larger than the largest city in 20 states.

None of the 10 largest cities in Hawaii have an “s” in any position (a function of the Hawaiian alphabet).

The above is what happens when I am on vacation. Note that the above has not been audited.

I dunno -- I wish my students exhibited David's curiosity and research skills.
