NPR Puzzle 2/26/12 -- Swan Penn & Robin Flight

Here's this week's NPR Puzzle:
Name a bird. Change its second letter to an E to get the first name of a famous actor. Then name the female of that bird, and double one of its letters. You'll get the last name of this actor. What are the birds, and who is the actor?
The answer is SWAN/SEAN PEN(N).

Here's what we know about Sean Penn: his older brother, Michael, is married to Ross's all-time favorite singer-songwriter, Aimee Mann. (Yes, if she'd taken his name, she would have been Aimee Mann-Penn, which is somewhere between Min Pin, the nickname of Miniature Pinschers, and Moneypenny.) Otherwise, I merely note that Robin Wright, the actress who played the titular princess in The Princess Bride, seems a much nicer (and birdier) person than Madonna, Sean Penn's first wife. I believe Robin Wright is Penn's second and maybe also third wife. (I get confused about how many times they split up and then reconciled.)

Of course I should know this because I had to study Sean Penn's Wiki page for the photos. In the end, I used a lot of his political activities for inspiration, as it got me to the Falkland Islands (or Malvinas, if you prefer), Tehran and Cuba. (Can it really be the case that Sean Penn supports the Assad regime in Syria? I find that quite difficult to believe.) To his credit, he's been very involved in the efforts to help the lives of Haitians following the devastating earthquake, so it's a mixed picture to be sure.

Ross Valley, Marin County, California--where Penn & Wright lived after their marriage in 1996.

Penn attended prayer services at Tehran University in 2005; this is Sharif University in Tehran, but the picture is so wonderful I couldn't pass it up.

In 2006, Penn participated in an anti-war conference in Sacramento. This photo is surprisingly of Sacramento. (Well, I was surprised.)

Stanley, Falkland Islands. Penn supports Argentina's claim to the islands, a position that has earned him a lot of bad press in the UK.

Malibu Canyon Road (another surprising photo of California, yes?). The Penns live in Malibu now, although the British press has asked him why he doesn't want to give his estate back to the Mexicans.

Havana, Cuba. Because supporting Hugo Chavez just isn't enough for Sean Penn.

Our tie-break rule:  In the event that a single round number is announced, AND two separate people picked the ranges leading up to and leading up from that round number, the prize will be awarded to whichever entrant had not already won a prize, or in the event that both entrants had won a prize already or neither had, then to the earlier of the two entries on the famous judicial principle of "First Come First Serve," (or in technical legal jargon, "You Snooze, You Lose")

What I meant when I said it was immaterial how I solved the puzzle was that since his divorce from Madonna, Sean Penn was imMaterial (Girl).

When I posted something about milking it, I was hinting at MILK, the film he acted in.
