Thanks for All the Fish!

Here is this week's NPR Sunday Puzzle:
Name a famous actress who has four letters in her first name and four letters in her last name. Add one letter, and rearrange the result to name an animal and the sound this animal makes. Who is the actress, what is the animal and what is the sound that the animal makes?
Ross solved this by finding a list on the Internet of animal sounds. The answer is TERI GARR + O = TIGER ROAR. (Easy for all Princeton grads, I would assume.)

And now for the sad news. This will be our penultimate blog post. I can't tell you why I'm stopping any more than I can say why I haven't stopped before now. Something about my disproportionate reaction to the Seth Rogen / Green Hornet puzzle let me know the time had come.

We've loved supporting NPR stations as part of the Pick a Range game, but credit where credit is due: we wouldn't have sent any of it out if you hadn't been such great range pickers! (We donated $140 to eight different NPR stations in 2015 alone, plus sent out a couple of puzzle books.) We may have one more contribution to make--we'll post on Sunday to see if someone wins this week.

If you win this week, or if you've won recently, you can always contact me at Magdalen (at) CrosswordMan (dot) com to tell me which prize you want.

And I've loved the photo sections. I clearly have tastes about what I like to look at (was there a snowy landscape photo I didn't use?), which meant there were scenes you had to look at no matter what.

Let's see what I get from "penultimate."

A sad change in the Wesun Puzzle blog world.
We'll lose the teeter to Blaine's totter.

Sad is the word. This has been a wonderful blog and forum, Magdalen and Ross. The Pick-a-Range was fun, it made one ponder the difficulty of that week's NPR offering. Magdalen's photo picks were always inspired and excellent.

When I won Pick-a-Range one time, I had a very nice e-mail exchange with Ross, who is in the "big leagues," so to speak, regarding puzzling and publishing. I asked him for some advice concerning my Puzzleria! blog (which AESAP had already kindly included in its blogroll), and Ross took the time and effort to give me some excellent ideas on how I might enhance P!. He was very gracious. And Magdalen has been gracious also. A very classy couple.

I will miss this blog. I will miss the repartee with Magdalen and my fellow blog posters. Thank you Magdalen and Ross.

Sorry to lose you but I think I understand.
'The Puzzle' is just not as much fun as it used to be.
I hope this ending proves to be a new opening and opportunity for you.
Best wishes for 2016.

Yes, Magdalen and Ross, we will miss this venue! Maybe we will see you over at Blaine's on occasion.

Fare thee well and all the best for 2016.

Magdalen and Ross, How lucky I feel to have known about this site. I am grateful for all your amazing posts and pictures. I can understand your decision to close down this blog site. Thank you for bringing sunshine into my days. I will truly miss the interactions and the bloggers. You are the best ever. Happy New Year! Gratefully, Natasha from Berkley.

I'm very sorry to see your blog go. But, I understand; I think the answer submission numbers reflect a similar dissatisfaction from the audience. In the old days, I wasn't surprised by 2000+ entries. Now, I'm surprised when it approaches 1000.

Farewell, and may 2016 be a wonderful year for you and Ross.

I am also sorry to see this end. Didn't make it every week but enjoyed guessing (and even got it once.) And to think, you are only a few miles up the road from N. Abington Twp.
Good luck, Happpy New Year to all, and cherrio!

I have been coming here most weeks since at least 2010 (time goes fast when you get to play with friends), when I needed help finishing an old NYT crossword puzzle. Google led me to Ross, where I also found Magdalen. I appreciate the puzzle books I won and the contributions made in my name, but I appreciate even more that I had a friendly place online to come weekly. You will both be missed. Good luck in your future endeavors. You have my gmail address, let me know when you are in Seattle, so I can buy you (at least) a beer.

Now I will never get to ask why your old PA license plate was a 7 letter version of "Ex Weird Man".

Ross Beresford said...

Except now my license plate is SOR. See if you can figure that one out (that's my final puzzle).

Oh no! Happy trails to you both!
